Guido Deiro 1886-1950 Childhood In Italy |
The earliest known photograph of Guido Deiro: A young nine-year-old, barefoot, sun-tanned, happy boy plays with his dog at the River Orco, c. 1895.The River Orca (in English: the "Ogre River") flows past the village of Salto. The water runs high in the spring due to rain and snow melting in the mountains, and slows to a trickle by autumn. Young Guido spent many happy hours playing by the river and hopping across the large rounded granite boulders.
The suspension bridge at Salto Canavese--built in 1906--crosses the River Orco between Salto and Cuorgné.The house where Guido and Pietro were born and raised is located about 1/4 mile from the center of the village of Salto. The terrain is quite hilly, as can be seen from these August 1956 photographs of Guido's boyhood home. Notice the fruit trees and grapevines. The house is fairly large; it has two stories plus a loft above where the family stored hay for the animals.
