Doktorski instructs students at the North Fayette Township Community Center June 2009: Henry Doktorski's Chess For Kids classes and tournaments finished their seasons with final rounds and awards ceremonies. The class at the North Fayette Township Community Center in Imperial—presided over by North Fayette Township Director of Parks & Recreation Bob Brozovich—graduated on April 27 and the class at Bethel Park Community Center—presided over by Bethel Park Recreation Department Director Gary Lafever—graduated on June 4.
The students battled their last round against each other, final scores were tabulated, certificates and trophies were given out, and then a party with refreshments provided by the parents was enjoyed by all.
Nine-year-old Aidan Meier, who won the first-place trophy at the Allegheny West Library Chess For Kids Class/Tournament, explained, “I liked Mr. Doktorski’s class because I learned strategies to play better chess, and I also enjoyed the excitement of the tournament and the challenge of playing against different players.” Seven-year-old Patra Hsu enjoyed the competitive nature of the sport: “I learned a lot about chess during Mr. Doktorski’s classes, and during the games I liked to battle with other kids in order to get more points and increase my score.”
Eight-year-old Adam Sova, the first-place trophy-winner of the Bethel Park Chess For Kids Class/Tournament, explained: “I love chess because I can use logical thinking instead of physical power to defeat an opponent.” Adam’s brother, six-year-old Martin Sova who finished in second place, loved the suspense inherent in the game: “Chess is especially exciting when a game goes on a long time and you don’t know who is going to win or lose.”
Doktorski's Chess For Kids Classes & Tournaments will resume in September.
